IN ORDER TO QUALIFY TO ADOPT FROM DSDA

  • Home visit is required. For this reason, we only adopt locally in Dallas and surrounding areas.

  • Vet checks are required, which means DSDA must be able to verify and/or written documentation must be provided to ensure that all resident animals are:

    • on monthly heartworm prevention

    • up-to-date on vaccinations

    • spayed or neutered

  • Applicant must be home more than not or willing to arrange daycare/dog walker during long days.

  • Willingness and capacity to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and responsible care for a pet.

  • Must have knowledge and consent of all adults living in the household.

  • Safe and secure areas are imperative to the safety of our animals.

    • We do not allow dogs to go into homes with invisible fences.

    • Dogs going into a single family home require a securely fenced yard.

  • Must receive proof of pet deposit and documentation allowing pets if renting.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age to adopt.

  • We do not support providing dogs as gifts or surprises.

    • Everyone in the home is encouraged to meet the dog to be sure there is a connection.

Unfortunately, failure to meet any of the above requirements will result in denial of the adoption application.

DSDA is unable to make exceptions to the above rules.

Adoption Process

If you are interested in adopting one of our amazing dogs (or occasional cat!):

  1. Please complete the online no obligation adoption application paying close attention to each pet's requirements..

  2. If the application is approved, the adoption team will work with you and the foster to schedule a meeting.  You are also welcome to attend our adoption events to meet our dogs. However, it is encouraged to email us first to ensure a particular dog will be attending the event.

  3. After meeting the dog, if all parties agree the process should continue, a home visit will be scheduled and you will be asked to have a list of supplies ready for your dog to come home.

  4. If the home visit is successful, the adoption contract will be signed, adoption fee is collected, and your dog stays with you.  During the 10-day trial period, you and your dog will decide if it is the absolute perfect fit. We are always here to support you via phone, text, and email.

Adoption Fee

Our adoption fee helps cover your dog's basic health needs including spay/neuter and vaccinations.  Because many of our dogs come straight from the street, their medical needs are extensive.  We spend an average of $500 on each pet for medical needs, training, and rehabilitation. For this reason, we kindly ask for the following minimum fees:

Puppies (12 months and under) - $325
Dogs (Over 12 months) - $275
